This page is dedicated to articles about what some on the designated Star Associations are working on. It is intended as a means of sharing what is important to them as an association. Pelican Lake Association of St. Anna
Pelican Lake Association of St. Anna, Stearns County. Pelican Lake Associations was Designated a Star Lake in 2009 and was also designated Lake Association of the Year by MN Waters.
Pelican Lake Association of St. Anna members have accomplished many things. By working in partnership with the neighboring Sportsman’s Clubs and government agencies, there continue to be many great projects that have been started or completed.
We have listed some of the highlights:
Starting in January 2011, we partnered with Stearns County Environmental Services and Minnesota Pollution control along with Stearns Soil and Water Conservation District in a Clean Water Partnership Grant to monitor all the inlets to Pelican Lake, monitoring water flow into Pelican Lake on a weekly basis plus storm events. The results were then analyzed in a certified lab every week from March through October.
In 2011 and 2012, funded in part by the Initiative Foundation HLRP Grant, lakeshore property owners are installing buffers and rain gardens to help do their part to slow down any run-off that may be occurring across their properties.
Beginning in 2010 and continuing into all of 2011, there were successful applications to the Initiative Foundation Healthy Lakes and Rivers Program (HLRP), in which were partnered with the DNR, Stearns County Environmental Services, and the Stearns County Soil and Water Conservation District. They held a community-wide visioning meeting facilitated by MN Waters and compiled the results of that meeting into part of their new Lake Management Plan. They have successfully written and gotten approval of that plan to guide them as they correct problems involving Pelican Lake.
The following is a partial list of the projects that the wonderful lakeshore owners have implemented in coordination with the Pelican Lake Association of St Anna:
Improved public access
Developed a professional brochure for us through Adelman Advertising
Partnered with Scouts to build Loon nest platforms.
Sponsored Ben Eli, who so successfully achieved his Eagle Scout status as a result of a rearing pond project.
Partnered with landowners who have put land aside and planted native grasses to improve bird habitat
Held fundraiser dinners
Wrote and implemented a Lake Management Plan
Wrote and implemented a Monitoring Plan and a QAPP document
Completed a substantially-updated parcel, depth and vegetation map
Rented acres of land along an inlet to the lake
Wrote and implemented a Lake Vegetation Management Plan
Helped landowners who want to put in buffers or sediment ponds along or near an inlet to Pelican Lake
Monitored water quality monitoring and provided copies of data to MPCA
Monitored secchi disk readings and provided to MPCA
Monitored lake level readings and provided to DNR
Conducted Kids Fishing Day
Held educational meetings
Paid for an aerial flyover of the Pelican Lake watershed to identify any sources of nutrient loading into Pelican Lake
Paid for a written analysis and extensive photos and reports of the data from the flyover, which included locations of possible non-point source nutrient loading from certain watershed areas to the lake
Hired a firm to conduct a Point Intercept Vegetation Study identifying the species and density of vegetation in Pelican Lake
Partnered with Sea Grant in identifying the non-native aquatic invasive species of snails in Pelican Lake. It is expected someone either released it into the lake or it was transported into the Lake.
Assist landowners that want to do a conservation project
Assisted members who wish to plant native plants on their shore-line.
Conducted fish stocking
Paid the DNR Permits $750.00 each year to allow property owners to treat the lake for swimmers itch and algae
Paid companies to treat for Swimmers Itch and algae
Pelican Lake has such clear water that, when the sun penetrates through the water to nutrients settled to the bottom, it causes accelerated weed and algae growth. This growth can cause difficulty for watercraft navigation.
The Pelican Lake Association has continued to take many steps to stop run-off from entering the lake from the watershed. However, members realize this is an ongoing process and they are committed to continuing to do more work on these issues.
Without the donations and assistance that we get from the area Businesses and our Membership, we would not be able to accomplish all the great things we do. We rely on our donations from partners such as Adelman Advertising, Stearns Bank and Insurance, Schrodens, Columbia Gear, My Salon Hair Design, The Landing, Pelican Lake Ballroom, Ramler Trucking, A.W.Research, The Store, Headley Hardware, St. Johns and Saint Benedicts College, Avon Liquor Locker, Lange, Central MN Federal Credit Union, Stearns County Soil and Water Conservation District, DNR, Star Lake Program, Bernicks, Scheels, Tracy Printing, Steve Bartz Construction, Sam’s Club, Walmart, Vexilar, Blattner Energy, Avon Sportsman’s Club, Don’s I 94, Avon Bank, C & L, Back Woods Quilts, Joe Land, The Landing, Pelican Lake Ballroom, Billy’s Place, MN Waters, Initiative Foundation, and numerous other groups.

Holdingford Sportsman’s Club and St. Anna Sportsman’s Club, for together they have supported each other’s programs and will continue to work together in the future toward improving the lakes fisheries balance and protecting those resources for many years to come.
Pelican Lake in St. Anna is the First Star Lake of Stearns County and won the Lake Association of the Year Award in 2009 from MN Waters.
We can accomplish so much more together than alone.
We were pleased to see so many people at our Fundraiser Dinner Event on Feb 3, 2011 for an evening of good food and chances to win some nice prizes.
